The first African-American senator since the Reconstruction and the first and only senator to be re-elected by popular vote. He was on the President’s Commission on Civil Disorders which investigated causes of riots in America.Through this, he made recommendations that took shape as the Civil Rights Act. He was also the first senator to call for Nixon’s resignation. Upon leaving the senate, he headed the National Low-income Housing Coalition.
